  • I hope you made it to the Engineering Excellence Awards Gala this year.  It was a terrific evening of great food and fellowship to celebrate a remarkable mix of engineering projects across the Commonwealth.  You have another opportunity to take advantage of ACEC/VA’s valuable programs by attending the Winter Meeting at the Greenbrier, March 9 - 11. The Professional Development committee and staff have arranged two speakers that could turn you into the informed, values based leader you always intended to be.

On Friday Dr. Bob Holsworth will help us understand the shifting political landscape and the demographic and economic changes that are driving that. Bob was a long time professor of political science and the founding director of the Center for Public Policy and the L. Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs at Virginia Commonwealth University. Bob is an engaging and learned lecturer. He had been on a slight hiatus from the public speaking tour, so we are fortunate to have him help us become more informed citizen leaders.

Most of us have or are currently facing the challenge of finding and keeping good people. During the second day, Danielle Aaronson of InnerWill Leadership Institute will help us align our day to day office culture with the expectations we have for new and future talent. Richard Coughlin, a featured and respected speaker at previous ACEC/VA meetings, is also affiliated with the InnerWill Leadership Institute.

The meeting kicks off with a reception in the Greenbrier’s famous bowling alley. That promises to be a hoot. Then on Friday afternoon you will surely want to take advantage of the falconry experience to benefit the ACEC political action committee. Who wouldn’t want to get up close and personal with some amazing birds of prey?

Of course the meeting location does not suck.  If you have not been to the Greenbrier this is a perfect first opportunity. If you have been before you know that it is worth the trip, and they have worked really hard to restore the facility and grounds after last year’s flood. I look forward to seeing you there.
