    Grand Award Winners: These projects show excellence in innovation and creativity, providing exceptional social, economic and environmental benefits

    Johnson, Mirmiran & Thompson, Inc. (JMT) for their Weight Restricted Bridges Crossings in Chesterfield County. The JMT team improved the maximum capacity of weight allowed on three bridges in Chesterfield County and one in Hanover County. JMT’s solution of live load testing of existing substructures had never been documented before and may become an industry changing solution, leading to national standardization.

    Mason & Hanger for their US Embassy in Islamabad, Pakistan. This $1billion project houses over 2,500 people across 43 acres and is the largest U.S. Embassy in the world. This embassy was designed to be self-sustaining and can operate for long periods of time in the event of a natural or man-made disaster. The embassy contains three multi-story high rises and everything residents need to live daily life, including a bank, gas station, commissary, and gym.

    HDR for their the Bridge Street Pump Station in Hampton Roads, which can pump 16.56 million gallons per day and is the largest pump station in the Hampton Roads Sanitation District system. The new site was surrounded by mixed-use developments, a yacht club and the waterfront. To blend into the neighborhood, the team developed multiple architectural concepts, ultimately selecting an option that matched a nearby seafood marketplace.


    Honor Award Recipients: These projects show outstanding design, delivery, function & cost effectiveness

    A Morton Thomas and Associates Inc. (AMT) for reimagining the Southgate Drive / US 460 Bypass Interchange, the gateway to Virginia Tech’s campus, which hosts 40,000 vehicles per day. AMT’s innovative solution eliminated significant backups during the morning and evening peak hours and during major events on the Virginia Tech Campus along this highly-traveled, National Highway System.

    CHA Consulting Inc. (CHA) for their Accomack County Turf Landfill utilizing ClosureTurf®. ClosureTurf®, a new landfill technology reduces the carbon footprint during construction by up to 80%. A long-term benefit of using ClosureTurf® is the reduction of maintenance costs by approximately 90% over the 30-year life of the fill.

    CHA won a second Honor Award for developing Glover Park in Henrico County. This Park is a world class sports complex consisting of 10 multipurpose athletic fields, a championship stadium, walking trails, restrooms and supporting infrastructure in Henrico County, Virginia. Glover Park has opened the door to economic development in Henrico County and continues to bring visitors to Henrico County from across the United States. It hosted the United States Lacrosse National Team performance camp in July 2018.

    Clark Nexsen Inc. for building the Central Vehicle Wash Facility (CVWF) of the Tactical Equipment Wash Facility (TEMF) complex at Fort Leonard Wood in Kansas City, Missouri. Clark Nexsen built a small and medium sized TEMF to wash vehicles, providing an environmentally friendly solution through recycling water in holding ponds with a combined capacity of over 7.9 million gallons, a $66,000 monthly savings.

    Draper Aden Associates for their Hardywood West Creek Brewery in Goochland County. The 55,000-square-foot destination brewery sits on 24 acres and provides a holistic craft brewing experience for guests and visitors. DAA designed unique structural features in this including an expansive mezzanine level, integrated silo, and innovative roof framing with exposed steel trusses. A challenge which Draper Aden faced was ensuring that all the mechanical components did not interfere with the structural components of the brewery, makes this project truly unique.
     
    STV, Inc for their Pulse Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) System project, a 7.6-mile transit system through Richmond’s most popular areas from Willow Lawn to Rockets Landing. Consisting of 14 stops connecting Richmond’s East end to West End at some of the most popular areas, the Pulse BRT System provides a hassle-free alternative to parking in Richmond’s crowded downtown.

    VHB for restoring Carter’s Grove Plantation in Williamsburg. Built in 1755, Carter’s Grove endured two wars and fell into disarray until Samuel M. Mencoff, a Chicago businessman, purchased the plantation with the goal to restore and preserve this 486-acre historic landmark for future generations. VHB improved 1 mile of internal roads and added a sophisticated storm drain system and stormwater management to efficiently handle runoff. Through natural channel design principles, VHB blended these parts of the restoration with the property’s natural beauty.
     
    WSP for widening a two mile stretch of Dominion Boulevard on Interstate 64 between Chesapeake and the North Carolina state line to a four-lane road, the only unimproved section of Dominion Boulevard. WSP designed a 16-foot-wide, dual purpose median containing stormwater management facilities.


    Merit Award Recipients: These projects show good design, professionalism, and engineering excellence

    Burns & McDonnell for designing the two-story, 40,000 sq. ft, Atlantic Shores Christian School in Chesapeake, seven weeks after Atlantic Shores Christian School was informed that they would not be able to continue using their school the following year. Under normal circumstances this timeline would have taken eight months to a year to design.

    Dewberry Engineers, Inc. for widening a five-mile stretch of I-64 in Newport News to six lanes. Dewberry kept this key route from Virginia Beach to North Carolina’s Outer Banks open during construction, averaging 100,000 vehicle’s per day during the peak of vacation season.

    Dewberry for a UVA 35kV Routing Study and Design, decreasing power outages faced by the University of Virginia (UVA) Health System and UVA Foundation by 90% by moving powerlines underground. Previously, the power lines were above ground and prone to falling branches, and unpredictable weather, temporary power outages occurred frequently.

    DJG Inc for renovating Virginia Commonwealth University’s (VCU) historical 1907 Raleigh Building and turning it into the central office of VCU’s Douglas Wilder School of Government and Public Affairs. DJG added a highly efficient HVAC system which improved the control and flow within the building, created a sanitary/waste system to counteract Richmond’s flooding, structural reinforcement modifications and the installation of a highly reflecting PVC roof system to waterproof the building.

    JMT for their improvements of Odd Fellows Road Interchange in Lynchburg. The completed project resulted in the design and construction of a tight diamond interchange between Odd Fellows Road and US 460/29, widening and reconstructing 1.3 miles of Odd Fellows Road, creating a 10-foot shared use path, reconstruing and widening of a bridge over the Norfolk southern railroad and constructing three roundabouts along Odd Fellows Road. This successful project provides a new gateway entrance to Lynchburg and improves access for the First Lynchburg Industrial park.

    JMT won a second Merit Award for their Arch Road Improvements in Chesterfield. JMT widened a 225-foot section of Arch rd. into a four-lane cross section which improved lane continuity to Midlothian Turnpike and for constructing a roundabout at the intersection of Arch Road and Arboretum Parkway. This corridor provides access to adjacent neighborhoods, the Arboretum Business Park, homes which front along the roadway; as well as a connection between US Route 60 (Midlothian Turnpike) and State Route 647 (Reams Road) and sees approximately 11,000 vehicles per day.

    Whitman Requardt and Associates, Inc. (WRA) for their two-mile, I-95 Southern Terminus Extension Project in Stafford County. WRA extended the express lanes beyond the Exit 143 interchange, improved operations within the weave approaching Exit 143 and increased capacity of the merge between the southbound general-purpose lanes and the terminus of the express lanes.
