  • Investigation of professional liability insurance options.
  • Maintain contact with academia, other structural engineering organizations and related professional groups.
  • Communicate through regular publications.
  • Participate in building code development and standards writing processes that affect the practice of structural engineering.
  • Provide support of mutually common goals of structural engineering by promoting legislation affecting public safety and advocating registration law enforcement and uniformity of requirements.
  • Encourage professional licensure.
Organizational Background

In 1986, the Coalition of American Structural Engineers/Virginia Chapter was founded as a state member organization of CASE National. CASE/V was formed under, and closely related to, the Consulting Engineers Council of Virginia, and membership was by member firms of CEC/V. CEC/V is currently known as ACEC/V (American Council of Engineering Companies - Virginia).

In 1994, CASE National participated in the formation of the National Council of Structural Engineering Associations to bring together other organizations related to the structural engineering professional nationwide. In order to provide the widest range of opportunities for membership, the membership status was modified to an individual status.

The Virginia Structural Engineers Council evolved from the original CASE/V organization and includes membership categories for those structural engineers in private consulting and also those individuals in related fields or businesses who complement or support the structural engineering professional and who subscribe to the purposes of VSEC.

In addition to issues related to the business aspects of consulting structural engineering, VSEC seeks to keep members at the forefront of areas of technical interest, such as unique wind and seismic loadings for varying regions, the implements of special inspections, and participation in the development and interpretation of the building codes.
