• In Memoriam - Daniel J. DeYoung

  • Daniel J. DeYoung, 78, born March 24, 1938 in Fort Riley, Kansas, passed on November 11, 2016, at his home in Jacksonville, FL. Dan leaves behind his wife of 55 years, Evelyn “Jackie” DeYoung; and two grown sons.

With a civil engineering degree from Virginia Tech, he spent his early professional years in Richmond under the mentoring of Carl Torrance and Andy Dreelin of Torrance, Dreelin, Farthing & Buford. In 1978, Dan set out on a vision and started DJG Inc. It is with this vision and tireless drive that Dan grew the firm to be the largest full service architect and engineering design firm headquartered on the Virginia Peninsula in Williamsburg. During his 50+ year career, he designed projects in more than 30 states, ten countries, and mentored thousands of young professionals leaving a legacy as the “trusted advisor” for the next generation.

Dan continuously gave back to his professional engineering community by volunteering his time to American Council of Engineering Companies (ACEC). Dan served on the ACEC Executive Committee as Senior Vice President and Vice President; ultimately serving as the National Chairman in 2002-03. For his efforts, he was recognized by his peers as an ACEC Fellow.

Dan also served his community with seven years as a member of the York County Planning Commission and four additional as the Planning Commission Chairman.

He was an avid enthusiast for sports cars, and had a love of the water, spending many days sailing and boating.
