Sometimes we don't succeed in a job or we don't like where we're working and we don't quite know why. Often times, it's because of a cultural mismatch between yourself and the firm you're working for. Like people, firms develop cultures - most often driven by the firm's leadership. Core values is only one thing that defines the culture of a firm.
Everyone has core values - those things you hold dear above all else. I would suggest that most engineers share the core value of integrity. Many architects and engineers have a core value related to creativity. If you're seeking a job, you might quiz your prospective employer as to the firm's core values. If the leadership can't tell you what they are, you should proceed very cautiously. If the firm holds most dearly the value of profit and your values are more aligned with creativity and innovation, this could likely be a misfit. Core value alignment doesn't guarantee a good fit, but it's certainly one step in the right direction. Michael W. Matthews, PE |
